== Introduction ==

Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and Western Pennsylvania share a long history. Fortunately, some of this history has been recorded by primary sources on manuscripts, books, maps, personal diaries, audio recordings, photographs and other materials from the past. At one point in time, these materials were widely scattered and mostly privately owned. The ASC has collected and still collects materials related to the history in this region. The holdings in collections span hundreds of years and include materials that do not directly describe the history of the region but are considered valuable and worth restoring and archiving. The ACS has a reputation of being well organized, and easily accessible locally and online. Much of the content is digitized and accessible to anyone that has access to a computer and the Internet. Much of the material in the archives is in the public domain, and created or published before 1923. Therefore, reproductions of the material can be freely used by publishers, industry, authors, news media and any other person or entity that wishes to use the images. The Center hosts tours for other archivists and libraries to assist them in organizing digitizing and developing finding aids.〔Rare and Special Collections from the Membership of the Association Research Libraries, "Celebrating Research"
